Green Tea and Fat Burning

Green tea has long been seen as one of the healthiest drinks out there. So we have water that’s vital and then we have green tea, not only for weight loss (as many might think) but also for its antioxidant effects.

Green tea is filled with substances that have outstanding effects on your health. What makes green tea so popular is the link between its consumption and burning fat.
Green tea helps stimulate fat burning and makes your muscles more active.

But why is Green Tea more special than any other tea?
The first reason is its caffeine content: 26-30 mg. You will notice that black tea has higher caffeine content 28-44 mg and coffee 60-180 mg. Caffeine stimulates the activity of the heart leading to an increased metabolic function. But this is not the only reason for which green tea is good for burning fat. If that were the case, you could stick to black coffee and be on your way to a new body.

The fact is you can use decaffeinated green tea and still get the same benefits. Before I go any further, I want to warn you about something. We tend to grab any piece of information as is and think that we’ve found a cure for something by merely eating a food item considered to be super-food. You are bound to fail and remain in your current state if you believe this. When you stumble across a food item or habit that promotes health, this comes as the missing link in an already set healthy lifestyle. If you don’t make any other changes apart from drinking green tea on a regular basis, you won’t see the desired results. You will think that everything is a hoax and you are better off without the green tea. Don’t fall into this trap. Change your lifestyle and work your way from there.

Getting back to the subject at hand, green tea contains catechines. Catechines are organic compounds found in tannins’ composition. To mention just a few benefits:

  • your nervous system will not be stimulated to the point that you get excited (as you would if you were to drink an energy drink) – this is actually a good thing; you won’t get irritated, angry and so on
  • your HDL cholesterol (good cholesterol) will rise
  • your LDL cholesterol (bad cholesterol) will lower

Among the types of catechines out there, the most beneficial proved to be EGCG – an antioxidant 200 times more powerful than Vitamin E.

Benefits of drinking Green Tea
Green tea helps:

  • stimulate metabolism
  • slow down cancer cell growth
  • destroy free radicals
  • burn more calories (3-4% more than usual)
  • eliminate visceral fat (the fat surrounding the organs and preventing them from working properly)

How does Green Tea help burn fat?
In order to burn fat, it must first be decomposed in smaller particles so it can enter the blood and be eliminated. This is where a hormone called norepinephrine comes into play. This hormone transmits signals to nervous cells to stimulate the breaking down of additional fat.

There are enzymes and hormones throughout the entire body, each fulfilling their own roles. Some may hinder the messages and the functions of others. This happens when the body is not balanced due to poor nutrition, lack of exercise, medication. Some of these enzymes and hormones may block the norepinephrine response – for instance when you don’t have any food around for long periods of time, it’s great not to produce norepinephrine in order to survive and not lose all that beneficial fat. However, what green tea does, through EGCG, is block the activity of those enzymes that would, otherwise, inhibit norepinephrine production. More norepinephrine – more burned fat.

The problem with this is that you want to lose weight the healthy way in order to avoid any future related health conditions. This is why you should consume green tea for short periods of time.

How much Green Tea?
So you’ve decided to give it a go and see how it all works out. But how much green tea to drink in a day? 2-3 cups a day are more than enough. Make sure you consume them in the first part of the day, starting bright and early in the morning.
When it comes to any tea, I usually recommend no more than 2-4 weeks in a row. You can alternate green tea with another type of tea or just stick to water.

Green tea is not a miracle drink. You can burn fat without drinking a single sip of green tea. However, it’s always great to have an alternative and know that you can order a cup of green tea when you are out.
